Editing

In terms of editing, I feel as though this part of the project was slightly less challenging than actually having to go out and shoot my documentary because I had already had some experience in using programs such as Final Cut and iMovie on Macs.
I did edit some of my project in Final Cut, however, I mainly used iMovie to crop and piece together clips as it seemed much more efficient and simple.
If I had chosen a project such as 'create a movie trailer', for example, then perhaps I would have used FinalCut Pro more due to the fact that a project like this would require more sophistidcated effects etc. For my project, a documentry, the aim was to make the piece look a real and genuine as possible and so this restricted the amount of editing and effects etc that I could incorporate into my project.
In the way of editing, I had to decide which clips would go where as I felt that it would not be in the best interest of the documentary to piece together everything chronologically.
After I had cropped and pieced together all of my footage I decided to add in the text in the way of a title page and also over the interviews.
Next, I decided to add a running commentary and voice over on some of the parts of the project so as to give the audience an insight, early on into information in which they may need to understand the following clips.
After I had added the voice over, I then decided to incorproate the text into my work. This meant going back and creating the title for my work and also adding the date and time to establish what's happening quickly and efficiently.
In the middle of my project, I decided to add the song, 'Keep Your Head Up' by Ben Howard. I choose to put this song in my project due to the fact that it is a song in which depicts life at the sea and a struggle. This is relevant to my project as it fits in with the struggle to find Stinky Bay and the surf lifestyle.

For my first ancillary task, I used Adobe Photoshop CS4 to edit my project. The stages for my first ancillary task, a magazine advert for my documentary, are as follows:

                                                                           Stage 1

Stage 2
Stage 3
Stage 4

Stage 5

At stage 1, I began my uploading a photo I had taken of a friend surfing. I then used a range of adjustments    and effects to create my background image. From stage 2, I began to add text to my project and for  this, I started off with inserting the credits. At stage 3, I added my reviews, and then selected the 'star' shape for the brush tool to create star shapes so I could make my project look like it has real reviews. At stage 4, I added   the title for my project and then highlighted the 'Stinky Bay' part of my project so that the project would look  more realistic and like a professional piece of work. Finally, at the fifth stage, I added the subtitle, 'The Search Begins When You Want It To.' I added this subtitle, not only to make the project seem more professional, but also to give the viewer a sense of adventure.

Documentary Examples

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-6N1436Ink

The above link is a good example of a surf documentary due to the fact that not only does it include decent footage of surf in Porroco itself, but it also serves the purpose of a true documentary by telling a story which keeps the audience interested.
The documentary includes interview footage from many different locals and so can establish the atmosphere of the environment in some of the local bays.
There are some interesting camera angles and the story of Porroco surf is well documented.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7JDdxsALVI

The next example of a surf documentary tells a tale of how surf around the globe is searched for by a group of surfers and so again, tells a story which is a vital component of any documentary.
Unlike the previous example, this example includes camera shots with a 'home made' feel which is not always a bad thing in terms of documentaries due to the fact that it contributes a great deal to the realism of the documentary itself.
Once again, much of the footage is just a compilation of opinions from different people and so establishes a general view on the subject matter. It also gives each individual a chance to create their own   views on the different occurances in the documentary.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lARhBa4SiDk

Like the other examples, the documentary title gives the audience an immediate insight into what the documentary is based on. The whole point of a documentary is to 'document' something and to therefore tell a mutual, un-bias story. This example certainly does so in the way that once again different opinions are displayed from different people in the project. This leaves it down to the audience to make the own minds up on he subject matter.
Just like some of the other examples, this documentary includes a voice-over which fills the viewer in on information on what ever is currently occurring on the screen.

Blue Crush

From this 'Blue Crush' poster we can instantly tell that the film is about surfing due to the following elements:
First of all there are three surfboards on the poster and so surf-lovers everywhere will be attracted to this film. Secondly, the name 'Blue Crush' also gives the idea of big bue waves crushign down and so we can interpret the film is about surfing.
The catchline at the bottom of the poster - 'If you want to feel the rush, you have to take the risk,' promises the audience an exciting film involving lots of 'edge-of-your-seat' moments.
The three models on the front of poster also hint that the film will involve lots of people who are not wearing very much due to the fact that they will be spending most of their time down at the beach in hot weather. This will attract people to see the film itself.
The colour theme as shown on the poster seems exciting as there are a wide range of bright, interesting colours which may symblize to the viewer that the film is going to be exciting.
The massive wave in the background signals that this is no ordinary surf-documentary-esc film and that it's gritty realsim and hard-hitting footage is a must watch.
The film poster also leaves the audience in a state of awe and wonder in the way that it is already beginning to depict a story in that we can see that these girls have already been in the sea, surfing some incredibly large waves. This then means that the film must contain eveidence for this and so we wonder how long a person can escape the furiouse grip of nature?
Finally, in the way of a subtitle, there are names of people and companies printed underneath the main title.
This attracts people to watch the film in the way that they are able to see and spot any names of people or companies who they rate well from previous productions.

Into The Blue

From this poster we can tell that the film is set in or at least near the sea which may be attractive to some people. We can also expect the sea to play a heavy part in the film due to the title 'Into The Blue' and the subtitle 'Hold Your Breath' - which also suggest that at least some of the film involves an underwater struggle which may intrigue the audience.
The two attractive models on the front of the poster may be an instant eye-catcher and hold the attention of the poster viewers.
From this film poster we can also expect the film to include some amazing scenery. We can tell this from the beautiful sunset in the background and deep-blue sea at the footer of the poster.
In the background of the poster, looking into the distance we can also see a helicopter which grabs the viewers attention int he way that something such as a helicopter would not normally be included in such an environment. In turn, this makes the audience think about what the story may involve and so they will want to find out what the sotry actually entails.
In the foregorund, the viewer will be able to see a speedboat which appears to be travelling at speed due to the splashback and so from this the viewer will be able to expect some rivetting action scenes and perhaps some hard chases which is a concept and feature of films which will attract a large target demogrpahic of action-genre lovers.

The Mummy

Here we have a film poster advertizing the release of the film 'the Mummy'. Instantly the viewer can recognize that the film is to be set in Eygpt due to the pyramids. This may spark the attention of those interested in different cultures as they may see the film as an opportunity to experience and see different culture.
From the film poster we can also see a large evil-looking face in which is formed from sand. This signals to the audience that the film is going to be of the horror genre as it shows evil surroundign the setting.
The 'dark sand' colour theme also signals to the audience that the film is to be of a horror genre as they can tell that beneath the colourful landscape of the pyramids, darkness lurks.

Jaws

From this film poster we can instantly tell that the film is of a horror genre due to the fact that we can see the attacker, a shark with ferocious-looking jaws heading in the direction of a stereotypicall helpless damsel in destress. The fact that the film title (written in blood-red) is named 'Jaws' also signfies to the view that the film sif going to involve jaws (of a shark) and is probabaly going to be quite gorey.
The subtitle at the top of the poster confirms the audeiences's idea that the film is going to be scary in the way that it is the 'terrifying number one best sell' which in a lot of people's eyes means that the film has a guaranteed scare factor!
Below the main frame in the center of the poster is three names of well-known actors which some people will recognize from previous films and will want to see.
We can tell from the shark and the sea and light/dark blue colour theme that the film is going to be set out at or a least near the sea which may attract peopel to watch the film.
People, when looking at the poster may be attracted to see the film in the way that they may feel that the shark is absoloutly massive compared to it's prey and so the film may tell an interesting tale of an epic struffle between good an evil; between man and and this beast.

300

In this poster for the film 300 we can instantly going to be bloody. We know that the film is going to involve lot's of blood due to the fact that the signifier is the colour red for the title of the film in which is splattered across the screen. The signified and the image we think of when we witness the signifier is blood, like blood red for example.

Planning

During Friday's lesson we we thoguh the topics in which we need to include and write under in terms of the planning stage.
In this section we need to mention:

  • Construction documentary

  • Treatment sheet

  • Location planning

  • Casting

  • Organising props

  • Storyboarding

  • Animatic storyboard

  • In terms of camera angles and shots, I have a fair idea of some of the shots and angles in which I want to use in my five-minute documentary, even though I will be fairly unsure of the detail of the shots until I have actually shot the film.

The following shots angles are those of which I feel I would like to include in my project, even though some may perhaps not be used.

Low-angle shot - with the camra under a clear cover, filming rain drops falling.
High angle shot of the surfer running down to the beach.
    Mid-shots of all interviews.
Low angle shots from below the surfers on the waves.
Canter angle shots when the surfer is on the wave.
Point of view shot from a camera fixed on the nose of the surfboard.
Long shot when the surfers are walking over beach/rocks and any other terrain.

As you can see my plan is to include a range of camera shots and angles.
In terms of organizing props for the documentary, not as much time will be spend on this aspect of the project as with others, this is due to the fact that I will be outdoors with enough scenery on set to producs media-realism anway.
The only props in which I will really need to organizse before hands is the surfboard/s in which are placed by the couch during interviews number two and four.

    Thursday, 30 September 2010

The film poster for 'The Descent' clearly depicts the film as a horror film and the words 'scream your last breath' aim to convince the viewers that the film has a guaranteed scare factor. The imagery on the film poster portrays the film being of the horror genre. The pure white writing - 'The Decent' stands out from the background because it contrasts the blackness in the background. The lighting in the centre of the poster signifies a firey hell sort of image. The quote at the top of the film poster - 'The Best Horror/Thriller since Alien' assures he viewer that this film is highly rated and fantastic to watch. The two woman on the front of the film poster appear to be staring down into a fiery pit which signifies to the viewer that they are about to enbark on a tretrous adventure which will draw the viewers in a make them want to watch the film.
The image in the centre of the screen is also formed in the shape of a skull which will appeal to an audience of people who like to search and look at for a deeper meaning.
The film poster for the film 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' appears to be a romantic movie, however, the character holding the heart seems to be quite comedic in the way that he has curly hair and is wearing a ring of flowers. The information in the heart also tells us that it is a 'romantic disaster movie', which will confirm the viewers idea that this is going to be a funny film. The fact that the film poster has a bright colour theme also steers the viewer away from the idea that this film is going to be solely a romance film. The character holding the heart stands out because he contrasts the plain white background. Viewers who know who Russel Brand is can see that he is playing a part in the film, due to the fact that his name, amongst others is in the heart. This will also mean that people will see this a being a funny film due to Russel Brand being in it.
The writing in the heart in which is held by the character also includes names of past films who were brought by the same people.
For example, the viewers who have seen and liked these films will want to view this film bcause it may show some potential.

This 'Indiana Jones' film poster will stand out instantly due to it's massive color contrast between the grey/silver outskirts and fire-like gold/yellow explosion. This explosion of colors will be an eye-catcher and will grab the attention of the viewers. The film poster itself is clever in the way that you can see that the film is about an adventure, presumably about the man standing in the foreground of the poster. The man holding the whip in the foreground of the poster is overshadowed by what appears to be an evil being. This will draw the audience in as they will tend to develop a curiosity and longing to know the outcome of the evident battle between good and evil. The man in the foreground is shown as being very macho with a solemn expression in his face. He is also holding a whip which my be interpreted as being kinky. This element of slight erotica may also attract female viewers as well as the predominately-male adventure-lovers.

This film poster for the 'Clock Tower' will instantly appeal to lovers of the thriller/horror genre due to the fact that the select choice of colors instantly represents gore and blood with the red title and darkness and evil with the black background. The disturbing and hard-looking face in the background will confirm the viewers idea of this being a horror film. This poster is relatively simple and also obeys the rule of thirds and finds the best places to put the objects in which are most important for the audience to see, for example, the left-hand third is the left hand and razor, similarly with right-hand third, however, the middle third includes the information (film title and names involved) and the macabre face which will confirm the audiences feeling that this film is a 'guaranteed scare' for all horror/thriller lovers.
The white foreground with the evil-looking character is contrasted with the pure black background and really highlights the details of the face which when focused on will really send a chill down one's spine.
The audience are instantly informed with the information of the name of the film because the masthead stands out so well due to the fact that the 'blood-red' really contrasts the black.

The 'Star Trek' film poster obviously has an instant appeal to science fiction film and 'Star Trek' lovers alike. The film has a dark background with an extremely light foreground center which is symbolic of space and the planets in space. The poster is very dynamic in the way that it almost gets straight to the point with a space ship in the middle of the poster. This is informative in the way that anybody looking at the poster will understand that the film is to do with space. There is a character in the background of the film poster at the top of the screen who viewers of the poster, even if they haven't seen 'Star Trek' before, will identify him as being a villain due to the fact that he has an evil smirk. This alone will attract an audience as people who see the poster will want to know what this character's intentions are and what they outcome of the film may be. Like many film posters, at the bottom of the poster there is the exact date in which the film will be released in cinemas. This is easy advertizing and will let viewers know how soon they can see the film.

    Analysis of 10 Film Posters:

This film poster for 'The Matrix' is very striking because the film appears to be very futuristic, which is significant in the way that it would appeal to a large target audience of science fiction lovers.
The color theme of the poster is important because the shades of silver and grey signify machinery along with weapons. The title of the film stands out due to the fact that there is a blue shade in which covers the word 'Matrix', This makes the word stand out from the background and makes the poster informative also. The character standing in the foreground of the poster seems to be very stylish and interesting too.
His identity seems to be moderately concealed and he is wearing glasses which covers his identity even more so. This will be appealing to people viewing the poster due to the fact that they will be lured into wanting to find out more about this mysterious character, which, of course, can only be achieved by watching the film itself. Another factor which 'sells' the film to the audience is the woman standing in the background. The woman is also very stylish and good-looking which is something which will appeal to a whole gender (men). Stereotypically, 'science geeks' or people who don't have much of a social life or contact with females will also find the woman in the film poster's background very appealing and will perhaps want to watch the film to find out more about her. The fact that all the characters are wearing black symbolizes that they are working together as a team. This will appeal to a large audience because of the fact that people will be drawn in as they will want to see this team battle it out throughout the film.
